Before, you sent HMRC one tax return a year.
Now they want an update every 3 months.
Cabbooks is Making Tax Digital software built for taxi drivers in the UK. It gets you ready for the new rules without adding more admin.
HMRC call it Making Tax Digital. Three things change:
Write down what you earn and what you spend. A bag of receipts is not enough any more.
Every 3 months, send HMRC your totals. It has to come from an app.
You still have a year-end to sort out, the same as always. Most drivers will have their accountant do this bit.
It depends on your takings. That is all the money you take in, before you take off your costs.
April 2026
More than £50,000
April 2027
More than £30,000
April 2028
More than £20,000
It is takings, not profit. If you take £55,000 and spend £20,000 running the car, HMRC look at the £55,000, and you are in.
No fines in the first year. HMRC are not giving penalty points for late updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, but you still have to send them.
This page is general information, not tax advice. Check your own position with your accountant.
Your year-end has not gone away. What has changed is the four updates in between, and that is usually the part your accountant charges extra for.
Cabbooks does this
Cabbooks handles the four updates every 3 months. You tap in your takings and costs as you go, and we do the sums and send them to HMRC.
Your accountant can still do this
If you use an accountant, they can still handle your year-end and send your final declaration, the same as always. If you’d rather do it yourself, you can send it through Cabbooks.
So you are not dropping your accountant. You are just not paying them four extra times a year, and in return they get clean records from you instead of a bag of receipts.
You can see your takings, your costs and what is left over, all on one screen.

Everything you need to run your books and meet the new rules, in one app.
With Cabbooks, you can track your income, record your expenses and keep digital records, all in one place. You can see what you've earned and spent in real time.
When it's time, you can send your quarterly updates and your year-end final declaration directly to HMRC through Cabbooks. After each update, you can check HMRC's own estimate of your tax.
It's a simple way to manage your business finances, stay on top of income tax and meet the new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax rules.
Getting ready for Making Tax Digital doesn’t need to be complicated. Cabbooks is Making Tax Digital software built for the way taxi drivers actually work.
It helps you keep digital records, stay on top of your income tax and send updates to HMRC without using complex accounting software. It also reminds you before every deadline, and when your MOT, insurance, badge and vehicle licence are due.
Getting set up couldn’t be simpler:
Create your account and connect it to HMRC. You sign in on HMRC's own website, and we never see your HMRC password.
Add your takings and costs as you go. A few seconds a day is enough.
Every 3 months, Cabbooks adds it all up and sends your update. We remind you before every deadline.
After the tax year ends, send your final declaration. The deadline is 31 January. Do it in Cabbooks, or your accountant can handle it, the same as always.
